Shillong, June 27 –Heavy rainfall over the past few days with intense showers on Saturday hit Meghalaya with disruption in road communication and water logging reported from many areas, including the State’s capital Shillong.

However, there were no reports of human casualty or large-scale damage to property from anywhere till the filing of this report. There were water logging in several low-lying areas in the State capital.

With all the rivers flowing through the city, including Wah Umkhrah, Umshyrpi are flowing in full spate. Nondeiñ river in Nongstoiñ, the district headquarters of West Khasi Hills was flowing above the danger mark.

There are reports of landslide in Sonapur area, East Jaiñtia Hills district disrupting smooth movement of vehicles to Tripura, Mizoram and southern Assam due to incessant rains. However, workers of GR Infra Pvt Ltd were engaged in clearing the debris.

In South West Khasi Hills district, commuters faced trouble as under construction roads weathered away due to heavy rainfall in Sarin and Jashiar villages.

In the capital, Shillong, water logging and land slips were reported from many localities. “Water entered our houses,” said a woman from the Lower Lumparing area of the city.

Rising water from a turbulent stream inundated a bridge and disrupted road communication in the Jumorlane and Dhobi Ghat localities in the Laban area.

Reports of landslips came in from several areas of the State following which rescue teams were engaged to clear the debris.Meanwhile, due to incessant rain during the last few days, the water level of the Umiam reservoir (Barapani), around 17 km from here had risen up to 3205.14 feet on Friday.

“It is apprehended that in case heavy rainfall continues in the catchment area of the Umiam Dam, the reservoir may become full which will necessitate the opening of the gates of the Umiam concrete dam to allow the flood to pass through,” an Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) official said.

“All persons residing or working in the downstream of the Umiam concrete dam are therefore cautioned against engaging in any activity near the banks of the river Umiam, since the level of water in the river may suddenly rise due to opening of gates of the dam. However, all efforts will be made to regulate the discharge of water through the gates to the minimum,” he said.

On the other hand, the met office has predicted heavy showers throughout the state in the next couple of days.
