Shillong, Sept 5: A Sub-committee was formed for drafting a memorandum on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, in the spirit of Annexed Agreement and Standstill Agreement.

The sub-committee was constituted on Tuesday during a meeting held between the KHADC and representatives of various groups, which include the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Meghalaya Indigenous Tribal Constitutional Rights Movement (MITCRM), Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) and others.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KHADC CEM, Pynshngaiñlang N. Syiem said that the sub-committee will have one representative from each organization who will together work on drafting a memorandum to be submitted to Central government and the state government.

“We have also resolved to urge the state government to take the proposed draft memorandum as the proposal of the state on the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule,” he said.

According to Syiem, the sub-committee has been asked to complete the process of drafting the memorandum in just one sitting.

“It was also decided that the memorandum should be drafted in the spirit of the Annexed Agreement and the Standstill Agreement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the KHADC CEM informed that another sitting would be held on September 8, to deliberate further on the matter.

“We would also invite friends from the GHADC and JHADC to get their views and opinions on the matter,” he said.

Syiem said the memorandum would be finalized in a general meeting to be held soon, before submitting it to the Centre and state government.
