Shillong, Mar 3: The Meghalaya government has extended the deadline for three Regional Committees to submit their reports on the state’s border dispute with Assam.
The new deadline is March 31, 2025, as announced by Chief Secretary Donald Phillips Wahlang.
These committees, headed by ministers and comprising MLAs and officers, are tasked with resolving the remaining six disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya dates back to 1972 when Meghalaya became a full-fledged state.
The dispute revolves around 12 areas, with six already resolved in March 2022 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU allocated 18.46 sq km of disputed land to Assam and 18.33 sq km to Meghalaya.
To address the remaining disputed areas, the Regional Committees will conduct joint visits and engage with local stakeholders.
Their recommendations will be crucial in resolving the long-standing border dispute between the two states.
