Nongpoh | 31 July 2025: A massive protest erupted in Rani Jirang on Tuesday as thousands of residents, led by the Syiem (traditional chief) of Hima Jirang, Paiem H. Wahlang, gathered to oppose the proposed plan by the Shnat Hima Nongwah Mawtamur to establish an administrative office in the village.
The demonstration, marked by chants and placards, was fueled by allegations that the land in question lies within the traditional boundaries of Hima Jirang. Protesters described the move as a serious breach of customary rights and territorial integrity.
Men, women, youth, and traditional leaders marched to the contested site to express their unified opposition. They accused Hima Nongwah Mawtamur of violating customary protocol by attempting to set up an office without the consent or knowledge of Hima Jirang, the acknowledged traditional authority over the area.
“This is a blatant provocation—a land grab carried out without respect for tradition or lawful procedure. Even if the CEM or KHADC permits it, we, the people, will not allow it,” said one senior community elder.
Protesters also condemned the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for its alleged silence and inaction. Several speakers at the rally accused the council of either ignoring the matter or being complicit, thereby undermining the traditional governance system.
The protestors issued a strong warning: unless the proposal is immediately scrapped and the KHADC intervenes to uphold territorial boundaries, tensions between the traditional institutions may escalate, potentially leading to wider conflict.
The demonstration concluded peacefully, but with a clear message—any attempt to alter traditional jurisdictions without proper dialogue and consent would be met with firm resistance.
