Shillong, Oct 13: The death of four-year-old Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai has been confirmed to be a case of homicidal drowning, according to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem, IPS.
Addressing reporters at the SP’s office in Shillong today, Syiem said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has established that the child’s death was intentional.
A 13-year-old boy, a neighbour who frequently visited the victim’s family, was apprehended on September 18 in connection with the case and has since been sent to a juvenile home.
The tragic incident came to light when Insaphira’s body was discovered on September 15 at a newly constructed site. She had reportedly been taken from her home in Nongrah Nonglum around 8 a.m. on September 14.
SP Syiem stated that the investigation was carried out thoroughly and that while several possible motives were considered, the SIT’s findings confirm that the act of drowning was deliberate.
He also clarified that, at this stage, the police do not suspect the involvement of any other individuals, and evidence indicates that the 13-year-old acted alone.
The SP added that the investigation remains ongoing, and a chargesheet will be filed once the inquiry is complete.
