Shillong, March 28: “Serving humanity is God’s will, but it is for each individual to choose the path they wish to follow,” said Mitchell Wankhar, owner of the MW Futsal Ground at Lawsohtun.
Speaking about the initiative, Wankhar stated that the primary objective behind establishing the futsal ground is to create a positive and accessible space for young football enthusiasts. He emphasized that the facility offers an opportunity for players to develop their skills, actively participate in sports, and grow both personally and socially.
He further noted that the ground has not encountered any major issues so far, with no significant conflicts among players or organizers. According to him, open communication and mutual understanding are key to resolving concerns constructively.
Wankhar highlighted that football plays a crucial role in instilling discipline, responsibility, and focus among youth. Despite challenges, he encouraged young players to remain dedicated, work hard, and continuously strive to improve their performance. He added that the futsal ground aims to contribute positively to society by providing a healthy and constructive platform for young people to play, learn, and showcase their talents.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Apart from this initiative, Mitchell Wankhar is also a well-known fish trader at Iewduh and is widely recognized for his commitment to serving the underprivileged and the community at large.
Notably, the futsal ground at Lawsohtun is the first of its kind in Raid Laban. Wankhar previously served as Rangbah Shnong (village headman) of Lawsohtun before entering politics. He was elected as an MDC from Laban Constituency and has also been an active contributor to the Church.
Vision Behind the Initiative
Wankhar shared that the idea for the futsal ground arose from the lack of accessible local playgrounds. Many youths had to travel outside the shnong and pay high fees to access facilities. Establishing the ground within the locality, he said, allows young players to participate without additional financial burden and helps steer them away from negative influences.
He expressed gratitude to Victor Lyngdoh for inaugurating the ground and also thanked Sanbor Shullai for his support to the constituency.
Inauguration Ceremony
The MW Futsal Ground was blessed and formally inaugurated by Victor Lyngdoh of the Shillong Archdiocese. The event witnessed the presence of local residents, youth, and community leaders, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting sports and youth development.
In his address, the Archbishop highlighted the importance of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork, and unity. He urged the public to take proper care of the facility and use it responsibly for the benefit of all.
He was accompanied by Richard M. Majaw, Parish Priest of St. John Parish Laban, along with members of the clergy.
Leaders Applaud the Initiative
Herbert Rynjah expressed happiness over the completion of the project, stating that the ground would serve as a vital platform for youth to showcase their talents and engage in meaningful activities. He encouraged young people to avoid harmful habits such as substance abuse and to remain disciplined, adding that dedication can lead to success at both state and national levels.
Leader of the Opposition in KHADC, Titosstarwell Chyne, also lauded Wankhar and all those involved. He described the futsal ground as a significant step toward promoting football in the region.
Chyne emphasized that despite challenges, the project was successfully completed through collective effort and commitment. He noted that sports play a crucial role in improving health, fostering unity, and building a stronger society. He urged the community to support and maintain the facility so that it continues to benefit future generations.
