Shillong, April: The Meghalaya Government has refused to withdraw or cancel the agreement for the proposed Taj five-star hotel project at Lumpongdeng, even as the Green-Tech Foundation continues its hunger strike at Malki Ground in protest.

Tourism Director B. Pakyntein (MCS), speaking to the media, clarified that there is no proposal to revoke the agreement. She stated that the project has received all necessary approvals from concerned authorities, including the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and other environmental regulatory bodies.

She emphasised that the project is being implemented in compliance with environmental safeguards and regulations. According to her, no permanent structures will be allowed on Lumpongdeng Island, and only temporary installations such as shamianas or eco-friendly structures will be permitted for short-term events.

“There is no intention to cancel the agreement. All processes have been carried out as per laid-down rules and regulations,” Pakyntein said.

Meanwhile, the Green-Tech Foundation, led by Chairman H. Bansiewdor Nonglang and General Secretary R. Lyngdoh, has continued its hunger strike at Malki Ground, intensifying its opposition to the project.

The organisation has alleged that the government is misleading the public regarding the true nature and implications of the agreement. It has demanded that the deal be scrapped, warning that the project could adversely impact the environment, water resources, and the ecological balance of the area.

Despite the growing protest, the government has maintained its stand, leading to an ongoing standoff between the authorities and environmental activists.
