Shillong, May 22: A resident of Mairang, Bah Tarcisious Mawlot, has expressed concern over the State Government’s continued interest in pursuing uranium mining in Domiasiat, stating that the proposal may still materialise in the future despite years of public opposition.

Speaking to reporters, Bah Mawlot said apprehensions remain among sections of the public that uranium mining activities could eventually be initiated in the area.

He noted that opposition to the proposed mining project has largely been driven by concerns over its possible environmental and health implications, including potential impacts on air quality, water sources, wildlife, and public health.

According to him, such concerns have intensified following significant government expenditure on road expansion and infrastructure development in areas stretching from Wahkaji to Guwahati, including the Chaigoan route, as well as along the Nongstoin–Rambrai corridor.

“These are relatively small villages, yet the government has spent substantial amounts on infrastructure. This gives an indication that one day, at some point, the government may initiate uranium mining activities and people may no longer be in a position to resist it,” Bah Mawlot said.

He further informed that on May 13, he met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and suggested that the government formulate a policy to encourage students to pursue higher studies in subjects related to uranium and associated sectors.

According to Bah Mawlot, the proposal was aimed at ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary educational background and technical expertise to participate in employment opportunities linked to the sector if the government eventually moves ahead with uranium-related activities in the future.
