Shillong, June 3: National People’s Party (NPP) President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that the NPP Legislature Party meeting held on Tuesday discussed in detail the selection of a candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Meghalaya, but no final decision has been taken yet as consultations with the coalition partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) are still required.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that following the NPP Legislature Party meeting, a meeting of all MDA coalition partners would be held at 2:30 PM at the State Guest House.

He stated that only after consultations with the MDA partners would the coalition be in a position to announce its final decision. He added that discussions and deliberations are still ongoing and it would not be appropriate to make any public statement before a consensus is reached.

“We are not in a position to reveal anything at this moment. After the meeting with our MDA partners, the State President and other leaders will address the media. We expect that by around 3 PM we should be able to hold a press conference and announce the outcome of our discussions,” Sangma said.

He further revealed that the NPP has discussed a few potential names for the Rajya Sabha seat, but consultations are still underway. The party will continue discussions with its MDA allies and take their suggestions into consideration before arriving at a final decision.

Sangma emphasized that the selection of a Rajya Sabha candidate is an important decision as the elected representative would not only represent a single political party but the entire state of Meghalaya as well as all coalition partners of the MDA.

The MDA coalition is expected to announce its decision during a press conference scheduled for around 3 PM on Wednesday.
