Shillong, June 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) will be held in Shillong on Wednesday, bringing together key leaders from across the Northeast.

The meeting will be attended by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, Governors, and Chief Ministers of all the Northeastern states.

Speaking to media persons, Sangma said the plenary session will serve as an important platform to discuss regional development issues and further strengthen cooperation among the Northeastern states.

According to the Chief Minister, Scindia has been actively encouraging inter-state collaboration, leading to the formation of several sector-specific Task Forces focusing on tourism, agriculture, trade, and infrastructure. These Task Forces are headed by Chief Ministers from different states to facilitate coordinated development efforts across the region.

As Chairman of the Tourism Task Force, Sangma said he will present a report and roadmap aimed at positioning the Northeast as a globally competitive tourism destination capable of attracting visitors from across the world.

“We should not market individual states alone, but showcase the entire Northeast as a unique and integrated destination,” he said.

Sangma added that reviewing the progress achieved by the various Task Forces and discussing the implementation of their recommendations will be among the key agenda items during the plenary session.

The Chief Minister also informed that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be present in Shillong during the event, describing her visit as significant for both Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.

In addition, a special meeting of the Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states is scheduled to be held alongside the NEC session to deliberate on regional developmental priorities and address issues of common concern.

The plenary is expected to focus on strengthening regional cooperation, accelerating economic growth, and advancing key initiatives aimed at the holistic development of the Northeast.
