Shillong, June 3: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, has stated that peace has been restored in Lapangap following a joint meeting involving officials from Meghalaya and Assam, allowing villagers and farmers to resume their livelihood activities without fear.

Speaking to media persons, Tynsong said the meeting, held at Lapangap under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, along with officials from Assam, Karbi Anglong, and West Jaintia Hills, was conducted smoothly and resulted in a mutual understanding to maintain peace and stability in the area.

According to Tynsong, both sides agreed not to allow the situation in Lapangap to deteriorate or lead to further tensions. He said the foremost priority is to ensure that residents and farmers can continue their daily activities and earn their livelihoods in a safe and peaceful environment.

The Deputy Chief Minister further informed that district authorities and officials from Karbi Anglong would work closely with the Meghalaya administration to maintain law and order, strengthen cooperation between the two sides, and protect the interests of the people residing in the area.

Tynsong said the State Government is awaiting a detailed report from the meeting, after which appropriate measures will be considered. He emphasized that the initiative is not intended as a temporary arrangement but forms part of ongoing efforts to establish lasting peace in Lapangap and other sensitive border areas.

Expressing optimism about future developments, he said the forthcoming meeting between the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam would provide an opportunity to further discuss unresolved border-related issues and advance efforts towards a long-term and mutually acceptable solution.

The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring that local communities are able to live and work without disruption while dialogue continues between the two states.
