Shillong, June 15: Adviser of the Synjuk Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Hima, Laborius Manik Syiem, has submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Meghalaya seeking intervention and protection for the traditional Khasi system of governance, particularly the institutions of the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid and Dorbar Hima.
Addressing the media, Bah Laborius expressed concern over what he described as attempts to weaken or interfere with the traditional governance structure of the Khasi people, which he said forms the foundation of community unity, self-governance and the protection of Khasi identity and customary practices.
He alleged that the actions of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) have the potential to undermine the traditional institutions that have served as the backbone of Khasi society for generations.
According to him, the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid and Dorbar Hima are the pillars of Khasi governance and should not be dismantled, altered or weakened by any authority or political interest. He maintained that these institutions have played a vital role in preserving Khasi customs, traditions and the collective rights of the indigenous people over the years.
Bah Laborius urged the Governor to keep a close watch on any developments that could adversely affect the autonomy, authority and proper functioning of the traditional institutions and Khasi Himas. He asserted that the movement launched by the Synjuk is not politically motivated but is solely aimed at safeguarding Khasi customary laws, traditions and indigenous governance systems.
He further stated that the memorandum submitted to the Governor is part of a broader public initiative to preserve and protect the unique traditional governance structure of the Khasi people, which, according to him, has existed since time immemorial.
The Synjuk reiterated that the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid and Dorbar Hima remain integral institutions of Khasi society and should continue to function in accordance with established customs and traditional practices.
