Nongpoh, June 23: With an aim to create greater awareness among farmers about the benefits and financial assistance available through banks, the State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday organised the SBI Smart Agri Customers Meet in Nongpoh as part of a nationwide initiative being held across India.

The programme brought together farmers from different parts of Ri Bhoi district who have existing associations with SBI, enabling them to learn more about various banking services, agricultural loans and government schemes linked to the agricultural sector.

Many of the participants were beneficiaries who had previously availed loans from SBI and have since expanded their agricultural activities and improved their livelihoods through the financial support provided by the bank.

The event was organised by the Nongpoh branch of State Bank of India at the Ri Sai Conference Hall, Nongpoh. Participants were warmly welcomed by the bank officials and were presented with traditional Ryndia shawls and other mementoes.

Speakers at the programme highlighted that banks today are not merely institutions for savings but have become important partners in rural development by providing financial assistance, technical guidance and access to government schemes aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector.

They observed that many farmers still hesitate to approach government offices or financial institutions and continue to rely on traditional farming practices that often generate limited returns. However, by participating in awareness programmes and availing institutional support, farmers can diversify their activities and adopt modern agricultural practices.

The speakers further emphasised that farmers can add value to their produce through food processing and packaging, such as converting fruits into juices, processing spices and bamboo products, and marketing them in improved packaging formats. They noted that government departments and banks are prepared to assist farmers in setting up processing units and other agri-based enterprises to enhance their income.

Among the dignitaries present at the programme were Ejaz Ahmad, Deputy General Manager of SBI; Sophia Ningsheng, Regional Manager; Serolyne Chyne, District Agriculture Officer of Ri Bhoi; Madras Dkhar; Pradip Kumar Bora; H Talang; Sandeep, Assistant General Manager of SBI; and Nikhil Singh, along with other officials and invited guests.

The programme concluded with an appeal to farmers to make greater use of banking facilities and government support schemes to modernise agriculture and create sustainable livelihood opportunities in the district.
