Shillong, June 29: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) and the Jaiñtia Students’ Union have announced a public rally in Jowai on July 14, 2026, to protest against the proposed Shree Cement mining project at Lum Syrman.
The decision was taken following a meeting with farmers and landowners of Elaka Nongkhlieh, where concerns were raised over the scale and potential impact of the proposed project.
JNC President Sambormi Lyngdoh said residents alleged that the proposed mining project would cover approximately 652 hectares, significantly higher than the 217 hectares that had been made public. According to the organisations, the project could adversely affect farmers and landowners if allowed to proceed.
The JNC and JSU have also demanded that the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the process through which approvals for the project were granted.
Additionally, the organisations have called for the removal of the Dolloi of Elaka Nongkhlieh, alleging that he violated traditional norms and District Council regulations by issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) without obtaining the required consent of the stakeholders.
Appealing for widespread public participation, the JNC and JSU urged the people of Ri Jaiñtia, civil society organisations, farmers and landowners to join the July 14 rally in large numbers to safeguard community land, natural resources and the rights of indigenous people.
JSU General Secretary Neilkee Mukhim also called on residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh, particularly those from Daistong village, not to be intimidated but to remain united in defending their rights against any form of exploitation.
