SHILLONG, JUN 30: The Jaiñtia Students’ Union has assured residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh of its full support, urging them to stand firm and not give in to fear following reports of intimidation by “certain mafias” in the area.
JSU General Secretary Bah Neilkee Mukhim said the Union met with farmers, landowners and other residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh before issuing the appeal. “After a meeting with the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh, including farmers and landowners, we wish to appeal to the community, particularly the residents of Daistong, urging them not to succumb to fear or intimidation,” Mukhim said.
He said the Union was told that locals were living under constant fear. “It has been brought to their attention that the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh are living in fear due to the threats posed by certain mafias,” he noted.
Mukhim said the JSU and Jaiñtia National Council are jointly asking people to unite in defence of their rights. “The JSU and JNC are calling on all individuals to unite and advocate for their rights. They reminded the community that their rights are valid and well-established, and that these rights are crucial for their future and daily sustenance,” he said.
He added that both organisations would continue to stand with the community. “Additionally, they reassured the community that both organizations will persist in their efforts to support and motivate them, stressing that they should not be afraid under any circumstances,” Mukhim stated.
The Union also encouraged residents to build wider awareness. “They also urged the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh to raise awareness that even if the government exerts its authority, justice for their rights will eventually prevail,” he said.
