SHILLONG, JUL 27: The state Cabinet on Monday approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, with a provision for a Rs 25,000 incentive and waiver of registration charges for buyers of electric vehicles.
Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak said the government is pushing for wider adoption of electric mobility in the state.
“The government is promoting the use of electric vehicles. The Cabinet has approved an incentive of around Rs 25,000 for anyone purchasing an electric vehicle. Registration charges will also be completely waived. Anyone opting for an electric vehicle will get Rs 25,000 as incentive along with free registration,” Marak said.
He said there are currently more than 5,000 electric vehicles in the state, and the incentives are aimed at accelerating the transition.
The Minister said the policy covers two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers, with different incentives structured for each category.
On charging infrastructure, he noted that setting up charging points would not be difficult.
“Charging points can be installed anywhere. For commercial charging stations, the government has already identified locations,” he said.
Marak also spoke on the state’s vehicle scrappage policy, which was introduced last year.
He said vehicle owners who scrap a vehicle older than 15 years and use the scrappage certificate to buy a new electric vehicle will be eligible for an additional incentive, the details of which will be finalised later.
“Assam has already started implementing the scrappage policy and has set up scrappage stations. In Meghalaya, people are yet to adopt it as it was passed only recently. Under the policy, if you take a vehicle older than 15 years to a scrappage station and get a certificate, and submit it to the District Transport Officer, you will be eligible for incentives,” he explained.
He added that Meghalaya does not yet have a scrappage station, but the government is open to entrepreneurs setting one up.
“The policy is already in place. Any entrepreneur interested in establishing a scrappage station will receive full support from the government,” Marak said.
