Shillong, September 7: The Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has appointed H Standly “Stanley” Rozario as head coach of the Meghalaya football team ahead of the National Games 2027, which the State will host.

The highly respected coach brings a wealth of experience to the role, including extensive knowledge of football in the Northeast.

Rozario coached Shillong Lajong FC during the club’s debut I-League campaign in 2009-10 and guided the Reds to the runners-up position in that season’s Federation Cup.

He subsequently worked with United Sikkim FC and Aizawl FC, while also coaching several of India’s prominent clubs, including East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Salgaocar. He has also coached the Indian Army/Services team.

A holder of the AFC Pro Licence, Rozario served as assistant coach of the Indian senior men’s team under head coach Bob Houghton from 2006 to 2008.

The Meghalaya Government is encouraging State sports associations to put their best foot forward at the National Games, with support being extended for infrastructure, equipment, exposure trips and personnel.

With football being one of the State’s most popular sports, expectations are high that the Meghalaya team can deliver a memorable performance on home soil.

The MFA said it was keen to appoint a coach with experience, a proven track record of success and the ability to work effectively with young players. Following an exhaustive search, the association narrowed its choice and reached a mutual agreement with Rozario.

Welcome back to Shillong, sir!
