Three South Garo Hills MLAs, Rakkam Sangma, Kartush Marak, and Sengchim Sangma, met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday, submitting a letter that proposes extending the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar, Baghmara, and ultimately Dhaka, Bangladesh. This initiative aims to enhance international trade, commerce, tourism, and education between India and Bangladesh. The key highlights of the proposal are - the proposed railway link will facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers, boosting bilateral trade and economic cooperation. According to the three MLAs since Baghmara is situated on the Simsang river and shares an international border with Bangladesh it will be an ideal location for cross-border trade and movement. They also stated that establishing an ICP at Baghmara will streamline customs and immigration procedures, facilitating efficient movement of goods and services. According to the three legislators the railway corridor will provide better access to markets, business hubs, and educational institutions, boosting the regional economy and offering new opportunities for local communities. They also stated that this project will open doors for global tourism integration across SAARC, BIMSTEC, ASEAN, and Indo-Pacific countries. The MLAs have urged the Chief Minister to take up this matter with the Ministry of Railways for inclusion in the National Railway Development Plan. They also requested the Chief Minister to facilitate planning, design, and construction of the necessary infrastructure to bring this project to fruition.Business
