Shillong, Dec 6: A foundation stone for the construction of Shillong Medical College and Hospital was laid by chief minister, Mukul Sangma on Wednesday.
The Medical College will be built on PPP mode at Reid Chest Hospital, Mawbah, here in the presence various dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Mukul expressed his happiness for laying the foundation stone and said,” establishing infrastructure on PPP mode is a very challenging task for the government as the concept is still new for many.”
He however stated that the state government has successfully taken up many developmental programmes in the state on PPP mode.
He also hoped that the establishment of medical college at Shillong and Tura would bridge the shortage of medical professionals and helped in providing better healthcare facilities to the people of the state.
Stating a medical college is not only for aspiring students who wish to become medical professionals, the chief minister said that it would also be a centre that would assist the government and policy makers in respect of all challenges associated with health sector.
“Having such medical colleges in our own state will not compel the people to travel to Delhi, Vellore or Chennai for tertiary health care. It is not just for medical students but for a comprehensive health care system that we need to put in place for our people,” he said.
Mukul stressed that new approaches for providing treatment should be adopted, and doctors and nurses need to equip themselves with knowledge and skill while treating and taking care of patients.
He expressed hope that the setting up of medical colleges at Shillong and Tura the challenge for competent young men and women who want to become medical professionals would be addressed while providing access to better healthcare facilities for the people.
Among others who spoke on the occasion, include of Minister, in-charge PWD (Buildings), Ampareen Lyngdoh and Minister in-charge Urban Affairs R V Lyngdoh, Secretary of KPC Medical College, Kolkata, Krishna Das, Director Finance of KPC Medical College, Kolkata, Uttam Chakkrabarty and Dr D Lyngdoh, Director, Health Services (MI).
Additional Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare P.W. Ingty and other officials were also present.
The Shillong medical college and hospital would be constructed by the firm, KPC Group from Kolkata. The cost of the project is between Rs 350 and Rs 400 crore.
