KSU- SCEC complaints to DC against Bangladeshis for stealing boulders

Shillong, Nov 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South Central East Circle (SCEC) on Monday urged East Khasi Hills District deputy commissioner, P.S. Dkhar to intervene to stop illegal collection of boulders by Bangladeshi nationals from areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

A KSU delegation met Dkhar here and submitted the complaint to him seeking the district administration’s intervention especially to request the BSF to intensify patrolling in the areas to prevent such illegal activities being carried out by Bangaldeshi nationals in areas along the international borders.

KSU South Central East Circle president, Innocent Khongstia told reporters that areas such as Nongsohphan village were affected since Bangladeshi nationals have been stealing boulders from the area including Khasmar river since such activities would lead to soil erosion besides affecting agricultural land.

The DC has assured the KSU delegation to take up the issue with the Border Security Force (BSF) besides East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police.

The KSU said that a group Bangladeshi nationals numbering between 30 and 50 used to come to the area everyday despite the presence of BSF personnel.

“They were using boats during rainy season and trucks during dry seasons to carry the boulders they have collected,” Khongstia alleged.
