Shillong, October 6: Lawyers in Meghalaya will hold a protest rally on October 7 to press the MDA Government to remove Amit Kumar as the State’s Advocate General, following the expiry of a two-week deadline given to the government to respond to their demand.

The protest will be held under the banner of the Shillong High Court Bar Association. The lawyers said the decision to hold the rally was taken after the government allegedly failed to respond within the stipulated period.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shillong Bar Association General Secretary T. Jyrwa said the associations had given the government two weeks to respond to their demand. As no response was received, the lawyers decided to proceed with the protest.

Meanwhile, High Court Bar Association Vice President P. Mawlong defended the decision of the two bar associations, saying the demand for Kumar’s removal was the outcome of a collective and unanimous decision.

Mawlong rejected claims that the demand had been initiated by only two individuals. He said the matter was discussed at a joint meeting of the two associations held on August 24, 2026, where members discussed the issue and resolved to seek Kumar’s removal as Advocate General.

He termed suggestions that the resolution represented the views of only two individuals as incorrect and misleading.

Mawlong further claimed that the person who had questioned the decision was present at the August 24 meeting but later stopped attending meetings convened by the associations.

He reiterated that the resolution seeking the Advocate General’s removal was adopted unanimously.

The October 7 rally is expected to intensify pressure on the MDA Government to respond to the lawyers’ demand. The specific grounds cited by the associations for seeking Kumar’s removal, as well as the detailed route and timing of the rally, were not available in the information provided.
