Shillong Oct 5: Newly appointed Governor of Meghalaya, Ganga Prasad was administered oath of office and secrecy during a swearing in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.
Prasad who was appointed to the post by President Ram Nath Kovind on September 30 was administered oath of office by the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Dinesh Maheshwari.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister, R.C. Laloo, ministers, MLAs and senior officials of the state government attended the swearing in ceremony.
Prasad, who succeeded Banwarilal Purohit, took charge as the fifth Governor within five years since 2013, and the 17th Governor of the state since 1970, after Meghalaya was declared an autonomous state.
Meghalaya was declared a full-fledged state in 1972.
The former BJP leader from Bihar was also the Member of the Legislative Council in Bihar in 1994.
The appointment of Prasad as full time Governor came after nearly nine months when the then full time Governor, V Shanmugananthan was removed from the post.
Shanmuganathan quit as governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on January 27 this year, following allegations by Raj Bhavan staff in Shillong that he “seriously compromised” the dignity of the gubernatorial office and accused him of turning the Raj Bhavan into a “young ladies club”.
