St. Peter and St. Paul Parish, Pynthorumkhrah, July 5: Parishioners of St. Peter and St. Paul Parish, Pynthorumkhrah on Sunday bid an emotional farewell to Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Laurence L. Nongkseh, honouring his seven years of dedicated pastoral service marked by spiritual leadership, community building and steadfast guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fr. Laurence, who took charge of the parish in June 2019, has been transferred to serve as the Parish Priest of Assumption Parish, Nongpoh.
A farewell programme organised by the Parish Pastoral Council at St. Peter Hall brought together parishioners, church organisations and community leaders to express their gratitude for his commitment and contributions to the parish.
During his address, Fr. Laurence thanked the faithful and various parish organisations, including Seng Samla, Seng Kynthei, Seng Rangbah, the Catholic Biblical Association (KBB), schoolchildren and volunteers, for their unwavering support and cooperation throughout his ministry.
Reflecting on his tenure, he described his years in Pynthorumkhrah as deeply fulfilling, noting that the parish’s efficient administration and active Parish Council enabled him to devote more time to his pastoral and spiritual responsibilities. He observed that, unlike some of his previous assignments where administrative duties demanded much of his attention, the Parish Council at Pynthorumkhrah effectively managed the day-to-day affairs of the parish.
Fr. Laurence also recalled the challenges of leading the parish during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying the period tested both the Church and the faithful. Despite the unprecedented circumstances, he continued to provide spiritual guidance and pastoral care, helping parishioners remain united in faith during a difficult chapter in their lives.
The farewell celebration featured cultural performances, songs and stage presentations by representatives of the six Catholic Managing Committees, who honoured both Fr. Laurence and Assistant Priest Rev. Fr. Joseph for their service. Adding a personal touch to the evening, Fr. Laurence entertained the gathering by playing the saxophone and singing, drawing warm appreciation from the congregation.
A highlight of the programme was a moving skit presented by Seng Rangbah, portraying the biblical calling of the first fishermen by Jesus Christ to become His disciples. The performance underscored the Christian mission of proclaiming the Gospel, making disciples and continuing Christ’s ministry through the Sacrament of Baptism.
Speaking on behalf of the Parish Council, Vice Chairman Bah David T. Umdor acknowledged the sadness of Fr. Laurence’s departure but expressed the parish’s deep appreciation for his years of dedicated service. He wished the priest God’s abundant blessings and success as he begins his new pastoral mission at Assumption Parish, Nongpoh.
