Shillong, Aug 23: A three-day review meeting of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) on National AIDS Control Programme for the North Eastern states began here on Wednesday.
The three-day meeting being held at the State Convention Centre here will conclude on Friday.
NACO Director General, Sanjeeva Kumar, health officials from various states and representatives from various state AIDS control society of the Northeast attended the review meeting.
In his inaugural address, Kumar laid emphasize on addressing problems faced by people living with HIV/AIDS as well as drug addicts by adopting various ways.
Kumar said that such problems should be addressed from the human rights perspective because addressing the problem only from the technical point of view, may not be successful.
He also agreed people suffering from HIV/AIDS and drug addicts should not be subjected to social stigma and discrimination, but ways and means should be found out to bring them to the mainstream especially involving them in various livelihood activities.
Additional chief secretary, P.W. Ingty, representatives from Project Sunrise, and other organisations also took part in the review meeting and discussed how to address the problems being faced by states in the Northeast.
