Shillong, April 24, 2026: Ri Bhoi district continues to strengthen its reputation as a hub of indigenous craftsmanship in Meghalaya, particularly in the eri silk sector. Areas like Umden, Diwon, and Raid Nongtluh have long been recognised for their expertise, supported by established weaving units and government recognition.

Adding fresh momentum to this legacy, Khweng village has emerged as a growing centre for eri silk production, driven by the efforts of local entrepreneur Prevalency Syiem.

A resident of Khweng, Syiem has set up a home-based showroom and workshop named “Ri & Last Eri Silk Products | Handloom & Traditional Attire.” Her initiative reflects a blend of tradition and innovation, aimed at preserving indigenous weaving practices while adapting to evolving market demands.

Carrying forward a family legacy, she learned the craft from her parents, Rikynti Syiem and Lastnokhel Jalong, after whom the venture is named. What began as a modest initiative has steadily grown into a promising enterprise producing handcrafted eri silk items such as shawls, stoles, mufflers, and traditional garments.

Speaking to the media, Syiem pointed out key challenges faced by local weavers, including limited market access and inadequate financial support. Despite these hurdles, she has managed to expand her business through perseverance and strong community backing.

She emphasised the importance of retaining traditional designs while incorporating contemporary elements to appeal to modern consumers. To widen her reach, she has also leveraged digital platforms and exhibitions to showcase her products.

Beyond business, her initiative is contributing to community development by creating livelihood opportunities for local women, enabling them to engage in weaving and earn a sustainable income.

Syiem has called on the government and relevant departments to enhance support for the handloom sector, particularly in market linkage, skill development, and financial assistance, to ensure the long-term sustainability of the eri silk industry in Ri Bhoi.
