Shillong, April 24, 2026: An atmosphere of deep sorrow prevailed in Byrsiek village of Ri Bhoi district as residents gathered to bid a final farewell to Babu Alosius Nongpoh, whose mortal remains were laid to rest with full honours at the Catholic cemetery on Friday.
The funeral service, held at his residence, was officiated by Rev. Fr. Sholin Kharkongor, Parish Priest of Mawlasnai. Hundreds of mourners from across the region assembled to pay their last respects, reflecting the profound impact he had on the community.
According to available information, Nongpoh collapsed during a public meeting organised by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) at Motphran. He was immediately rushed to Robert Gordon Hospital in Jaiaw with the assistance of MDCs from Umroi and Mawhati, but was later declared dead by doctors.
The funeral saw participation from family members, relatives, and members of the Catholic community, including representatives of the Synjuk ki Seng Rangbah Katholik Zone 7, Parish Mawlasnai, and the shnong Byrsiek Dorbar.
Late Nongpoh was widely respected as a farmers’ leader and the founder of the HFU Ri Bhoi District, known for his dedication to community welfare and grassroots initiatives. His passing cast a solemn shadow over the village, with people from various localities coming together to honour his life and service.
Speakers at the gathering remembered him as a compassionate and committed individual who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the people. Family members described his death as an irreparable loss not only to them but to the entire community.
He was also recognised for his role as an environmental advocate, particularly in protecting the migratory Amur Falcon. Through sustained awareness efforts among villagers and youth, he contributed significantly to improving conservation practices during the birds’ seasonal arrival in Meghalaya.
In addition, Nongpoh served as a dedicated shnong leader, promoting unity, peace, and development while upholding Khasi traditions and values. Known for his accessibility and willingness to address public concerns, he earned widespread respect across Ri Bhoi.
His contributions to environmental conservation and community service will remain a lasting legacy in the hearts of the people of Byrsiek and beyond.
