Supreme Court defers Meghalaya’s petition on medical seats to Sept 15

Shillong Sept 11: The Supreme Court could not take up the hearing of a petition filed by the Meghalaya government against Assam on Monday and re-listed the matter for hearing on Friday.

On September 4, the Meghalaya government has filed the petition in Supreme Court against the Assam government for abolishing 10 medical seats reserved for Meghalaya students.

On September 5, the Apex court admitted the petition and listed for hearing on September 11.

An official in the Meghalaya government said that though the matter has been listed for hearing, the Apex Court could not take it up as too many items were listed for the day.

“We were informed that the Apex Court could not take up the matter, and re-listed it for hearing on Friday,” the official said.
Meghalaya has filed the petition requesting the Supreme Court to retain the 10 medical reserved seats in Assam allotted to Meghalaya for the several years. It has also prayed to the court to include the Medical Council of India as a party in the case.
It was alleged that Assam had not communicated to them regarding the change of rules for admission into medical colleges, which led to the abolition of the 10 medical seats reserved for Meghalaya.
Assam has been reserving 10 medical seats for Meghalaya — four each in Assam Medical College and Hospital and Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and two in Silchar Medical College.

Meghalaya has no medical college of its own till date except the Central institute, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, that offers nine medical seats to students from Meghalaya.
