Shillong, Nov. 23: Celebrating the foundation day of the Seng Khasi organization of Meghalaya’s indigenous Khasi-Pnar communities, the 118th ‘Seng Kut Snem’ was celebrated with great fanfare at the Weiking Field,Jaiaw here on Thursday.
Following the traditional Khasi faith or the Niam Khasi Seng Khasi members gather to pay their respects to God, the Almighty. This celebration is a form of Community Prayer for protection of the distinct identity of the Khasi Race.
It is on this day ,118years ago the Khasi community equally blessed as other races by God the almighty ,brought out 16 magnanimous young men who stood up and led the Community against the oppression of the British .
This was the movement for preserving and conserving the uniqueness of Khasi Belief, Traditional and Culture – a movement that was and will always be remembered as the ‘Seng Khasi Movement’.
Earlier, the festival of the indigenous Khasi faith and culture ‘Seng Kut Snem’ was celebrated from fire brigade playground where youths, elderly men and women from a faraway hamlet dressed in colorful traditional attires took part in a procession known as “Iaid Pyni Riti” which was taken out in the city depicting the different facets of the indigenous culture and faith and the Seng Khasi flag featuring a ‘Rooster’ against the backdrop of the rising sun prominently waving during the procession and culminated at the Lympung Weiking,Jaiaw where prayers were offered to the God the Creator and lectures on the Khasi faith and ways of life are delivered followed by a cultural programme.
