Shillong, Sept 19: Football fans in Meghalaya will witness history this Saturday with the kick-off of the inaugural Meghalaya Women’s State League (MWSL) 2025, as Laitkor SC take on Na Rympei Football Academy in the opening match at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 PM under floodlights.
Laitkor SC enter the tournament as champions of the Shillong Sports Association’s Women’s League 2024, while Na Rympei FA earned their spot by winning the Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association’s women’s tournament.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, the new Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla, has confirmed his presence at the opening ceremony.
The MWSL marks the first-ever statewide league for women’s football in Meghalaya, bringing together 13 top teams representing district associations affiliated with the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA). The competition fulfills a long-cherished dream of the MFA to establish a premier women’s league and paves the way for Meghalaya clubs to compete in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) second division for the first time.
Modeled after the successful Meghalaya State League for men’s clubs, the MWSL allows district associations that organized women’s leagues to nominate their champions and runners-up. Eight district associations qualified, resulting in the participation of 13 clubs for this maiden edition.
Groupings and Venues:
Group A: Laitkor SC, Na Rympei FA, Pay For Right FA (SSA runners-up), Lapalang SSCC (Riwar Mihngi FA runners-up), and Attacker’s YC Pahamsyiem (RBDSA runners-up).
