SHILLONG, DEC 3: In a major boost to Meghalaya’s anti-drug operations, the Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) has procured six specialised sniffer dogs to support the State Police in detecting narcotics and strengthening enforcement activities.
The squad comprises three Belgian Malinois and three Cocker Spaniels, valued at Rs 12.54 lakh, which recently completed an intensive narcotics detection training programme in Bengaluru from April to November 2025.
Alongside the canine unit, nine Meghalaya Police personnel received specialised training to serve as handlers and ensure effective field deployment.
DREAM Director Francis Kharshiing said the induction of the sniffer dogs will significantly enhance the State’s capability in identifying concealed substances and reading human behavioural cues during enforcement operations.
Currently, the dogs are undergoing an acclimatisation phase under the supervision of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) to adapt to Meghalaya’s climate and terrain before being pressed into full service.
“The dogs have successfully completed their training and are now adjusting to the weather and environmental conditions of Meghalaya. This transitional period is essential to ensure they are fully comfortable, responsive, and capable of performing effectively in the State’s unique terrain and climate,” Kharshiing said.
Once acclimatisation is complete, trained handlers will deploy the canine unit for field duties and anti-narcotics interventions across the state.
