Shillong, April 14: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) has voiced strong dissatisfaction over the State Government’s continued delay in granting official or associate official status to the Khasi language in Meghalaya.
Speaking at a public gathering held at Iew Umsning on Tuesday, KAS President Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait said the organisation could no longer remain silent on an issue that directly impacts the identity, preservation, and future of the Khasi language.
He informed that the Society has initiated a series of public meetings across Bri U Hynñiewtrep to raise awareness and mobilise public support, while simultaneously increasing pressure on the government to take decisive action.

KAS has now set April 18 as the deadline for the government to make its position clear. The Society has specifically demanded that a special session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly be convened to deliberate on granting official status to the Khasi language.
“If the government fails to act within the stipulated time, the Society will be compelled to initiate further public action,” Dr. Nonglait warned.
The organisation stressed that the Khasi language remains a vital component of the community’s cultural identity and heritage. It cautioned that continued delay in according it due recognition could result in long-term linguistic and cultural consequences, particularly in its use in governance and administration.
KAS has urged the State Government to respond promptly and take appropriate steps to safeguard and promote the language for future generations.
