Nongpoh, April 24: The District Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2026 in Ri Bhoi concluded on Friday after three days of intense competition, showcasing the talent and determination of students from various schools across the district.
The final day witnessed enthusiastic participation in multiple track and field events, including the 600m race, 200m sprint, and relay races. The 4x400m relay for both boys and girls emerged as a major highlight, drawing loud cheers from spectators for its thrilling finishes.
The closing ceremony was graced by Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem as chief guest. He was accompanied by District School Education Officer Restorewel Shadap as guest of honour, along with District Sports Officer Bobby L Nongbet, RBDSA president RB Shadap, Assistant Commissioner E Marak, and other officials, teachers and spectators.
Adding cultural vibrancy to the event, performances by local music group Thymmei la Rympei entertained the audience during the closing programme.
A special tribute was paid to late Retina Hanse, a promising athlete who had brought laurels to the district and the state. The District Sports Officer’s office honoured her mother as a mark of respect and remembrance.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this year’s meet was the setting of 17 new records across various disciplines. Students displayed significant improvement in sprint timings, long jump distances, and field events such as shot put, javelin, and discus throw, underlining the growing standard of athletics in the district.
Awards were presented in several categories, including Best Athlete, Best Team, and Overall Champion. St Alfred Higher Secondary School Marngar emerged as the Overall Champion, while St Paul Higher Secondary School Nongpoh secured the second position.
The top-performing schools and athletes from the meet will go on to represent Ri Bhoi district at the upcoming State Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2026.
