Shillong, May 30: Langsning FC booked their place in the final of the 5th Meghalaya State League (MSL) for the first time in their history after staging a spirited comeback to defeat Shillong Lajong FC 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the SSA Stadium on Friday.
In a thrilling semifinal that showcased some of the finest football seen in this year’s competition, Lajong took the lead in the 21st minute through Fridison Wanniang, who finished clinically with a left-footed strike after being set up by Deibormame Tongper.
Lajong dominated much of the first half, but Langsning emerged stronger after the break and gradually took control of proceedings. Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when tournament top scorer Nelson Rymbai netted his 23rd goal of the campaign, converting from a long throw delivered by Chusrang Sangma to restore parity.
Both teams continued to create chances during the additional 30 minutes of extra time, with Fridison Wanniang coming close to finding a winner for Lajong. However, neither side could break the deadlock, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.
Langsning goalkeeper Nister Roy Suting proved decisive from the spot, producing a crucial save before Samchaphrang Lato missed Lajong’s final penalty. Langsning held their composure to secure a 4-2 victory in the shootout and spark jubilant celebrations among their supporters.
The result sets up an exciting final against Nongkseh SSCC on June 5. The showdown guarantees a new champion, with Nongkseh making their debut appearance in the final and Langsning chasing their maiden Meghalaya State League title.
The outcome also ensures that the Meghalaya State League, an initiative of the Meghalaya Football Association with the support of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, will crown its fifth different champion in as many editions.
A packed SSA Stadium witnessed the dramatic encounter, with fans remaining until the final whistle to applaud a memorable clash between two of Shillong’s most passionate football clubs.
With several days to recover and prepare, both Nongkseh and Langsning will now turn their focus to what promises to be a spectacular final and the crowning of a new champion of Meghalaya football.
