MBBS seats: Apex Court admits Meghalaya’s petition, hearing on Sept 12

Shillong, Sept 5: The Supreme Court has admitted a petition filed by the Meghalaya government against the Assam government for allegedly abolishing ten reserved medical seats, and the matter has been listed for hearing on September 11.

“The petition was in Supreme Court on Monday and the Court has admitted it today. The matter was listed for hearing on September 11,” Health minister, Roshan Warjri told reporters here on Tuesday.

The Minister said that the state government has also prayed to the Court to include the Medical Council of India as a party in the case .

Warjri alleged that there was no official communication from the Assam government with regards to its decision to change the rules for admitting students into medical colleges.

Earlier, Meghalaya has been allotted 10 MBBS seats by Assam in three medical colleges – four seats in Assam Medical College and Hospital, four seats in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, and two seats in Silchar Medical College.
Meghalaya has no medical colleges of its own even after 45 years of statehood. Meghalaya was created a full-fledged state by carving out of Assam in 1972.
