Shillong, Mar 8: Nomination papers of candidates from both ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance and opposition Congress were found valid for the election to the Assembly Speaker’s post.
The ruling side, National People’s Party-led MDA coalition fielded seventh time MLA from Shella and former chief minister, Dr Donkupar Roy as its candidate.
The Congress fields two-time Congress MLA from Salmanpara, Winnerson D. Sangma as the candidate for the Speaker’s post.
Roy was first elected from Shella in 1988 as an Independent and he retained the seat in this year’s Assembly elections for the seventh consecutive time.
Winnerson was elected for the second time from Salmanpara.
The special session of the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to elect the new Speaker will be held on March 12.
On the same day, the MDA coalition led by chief minister, Conrad K. Sangma would also move a vote of confidence in the House.
Conrad who is the Lok Sabha MP from Tura, has to face election within six months from any constituency and get elected as member of the Assembly in order to continue as chief minister.
